IU Bloomington student to receive Goldwater Scholarship

Indiana University Bloomington junior Samantha Herbst of Indianapolis has been selected as a one-year Goldwater Scholar.

The Goldwater Foundation awards one- and two-year scholarships to undergraduates on the basis of academic merit and career goals. The scholarship can be used to pay for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500.

Herbst is interested in the molecular nature of infectious disease. She has a double major in political science and biology, and is currently doing research with David Clemmer, the Robert Mann Chair and chairman of the Department of Chemistry. Her career goal is to become a researcher and university professor studying the molecular biology of infectious diseases.

"Students like Samantha are gifts to the university," Clemmer said. "Her work involving the prediction of mobilities of ions from databases is likely to become very important. To have such a young person influence this area is quite remarkable. This award is richly deserved, and I'm so pleased to have had the chance to work with her."

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
