More opportunities for IU faculty for international engagement

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Patrick O'Meara, vice president for international affairs at Indiana University, has announced that new grant programs for IU faculty members and academic units are available to help meet the goals of the university's international strategic plan.
In addition to existing grant programs for faculty to speak at overseas conferences or to bring an international guest to IU, faculty members now will be able to secure support to study a language, develop a study abroad course or begin new international research. Schools or other major academic units will have opportunities to investigate the expansion of an existing cooperative agreement with an institution overseas and the possibility of bringing a key scholar or world leader to Bloomington.
"Funds have been earmarked for innovative international grants in 2008-09," said O'Meara, who encouraged faculty and librarians on any IU campus to apply. "Creative proposals which address IU's international goals will receive new levels of support that are in line with our strategic plan."
The faculty grant programs for 2008-09 include:
- Conference Grants -- Partial support for faculty to attend an international conference to present a competitively selected paper. Deadlines: Oct. 1, Jan. 15, April 1, July 1. Funding: Up to $1,200.
- Overseas Study Program Development Grants. Support for faculty to explore the academic and logistical local arrangements for prospective faculty-led study abroad programs. Deadline: Nov. 1. Funding: Maximum of $3,000.
- Language Learning Grants. Support for IU faculty to acquire new language capability necessary for carrying out a planned research activity or to enhance teaching, or engage in other university-related activities. Grants may be awarded for intensive language programs in the U.S. or abroad, special tutorials or regularly offered language courses. Applications will be accepted when these opportunities arise. Funding: $2,000 to $5,000.
- IU Conference and Workshop Grants. Support for IU departments or faculty to conduct symposia, conferences, workshops and roundtables at IU. The event should bring people together to explore international topics in new ways, to discuss vigorous new directions in international research, or to explore scientific topics with international colleagues. Deadlines: Nov. 1, Feb. 1. Funding: $3,000 to $12,000, depending on scope and participation.
- Overseas Research Grants. Support for IU faculty to explore new research projects to be conducted abroad. Deadlines: Nov. 1, March 1. Funding: $2,000 to $5,000.
- Short-term International Visitors Grants. Partial support for IU faculty to bring international faculty and specialists to IU to present lectures or performances. Applications will be accepted as these opportunities arise. Funding: $400-$500.
- OVPIA International Exchange Development Grants. Support for IU campuses or schools to explore new exchange possibilities with IU's already existing university-wide strategic or major exchange partners. Deadlines: Nov. 1; Feb. 1. Funding: $5,000 to $10,000.
- Grants to bring outstanding international scholars or distinguished international leaders to IU. Support for IU schools and administrators to bring international scholars or individuals who have demonstrated significant leadership in international affairs to the university. Funding: Up to $25,000.
