Indiana University faculty members named Fulbright Scholars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Eleven Indiana University faculty members have been named Fulbright Scholars for 2008-09, enabling them to lecture and conduct research in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.
Two of the 11 received Fulbright Distinguished Chair awards. Christopher Irving Beckwith, professor in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at IU Bloomington, was named the University of Vienna Chair at the University of Vienna in Austria. Gerard Nicholas Magliocca, professor at the IU School of Law--Indianapolis, is the Roosevelt-Dow Distinguished Research Chair of the Roosevelt Study Center in Middelburg, Netherlands.
The IU Fulbright Scholars include five faculty members from IU Bloomington, two each from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, and one each from IU East and IU Southeast.
"The selection of 11 faculty members as Fulbright Scholars is testament to both the excellence and the global reach of scholarship and research at Indiana University," said IU President Michael A. McRobbie. "All of us at IU are proud of their achievements, and we hope their overseas experiences will prove to be enriching and productive."
The Fulbright Program, administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, is the flagship international education program sponsored by the U.S. government. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, it currently operates in 155 countries. It awards approximately 6,000 Fulbright grants each year to scholars, students, teachers, artists, writers and professionals.
