BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- On Monday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m., Indiana University Bloomington VIPs and scientists will gather to celebrate the construction of a unique science building.

The Research and Teaching Preserve Field Laboratory, a "green" building with wet and dry lab space, offices and meeting facilities, is the first such structure built on university wooded lands with the principal purpose of advancing environmental science. The Field Lab will be located in an eastern alcove of the university-owned Griffy Woods on the north end of the IU Bloomington campus. The lab will provide a seamless interface between nature and modern research and teaching facilities. The lab will also be a data hub for real-time measurements of environment processes based on remote sensors placed in the preserve.

The Field Lab will be IU Bloomington's second LEED-certified building. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a certification program that uses nationally accepted benchmarks to assess the environmental friendliness of buildings and landscape projects. IU Bloomington's first LEED-certified structure is the new Optometry Clinic, which will be completed at the end of the month. The embrace of green buildings by university architects and administrators demonstrates the university's strong commitment to environmental responsibility.
