IU’s Greek houses offer “Safe Halloween” for community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 27, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Families can get a safe jump start on Halloween at Indiana University Wednesday (Oct. 29).

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, IU's Panhellenic Association -- in collaboration with the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council -- is hosting IU's annual "Safe Halloween" event on North Jordan Avenue.

"Wednesday's event is a great opportunity for local youth to visit with IU students, build a sense of community, be safe and have fun," said Kirk White, IU's director of community relations.

Sari Applebaum, director of new member leadership development for the Panhellenic Association, said Safe Halloween is an annual opportunity for various groups to come together as a community on campus.

"Safe Halloween is a day that the North Jordan Extension is closed down and every Greek house has games, music and candy in a safe, fun environment," said Applebaum, adding that activities will include corn hole, "pin the stem on the pumpkin" and mummy wraps.

Applebaum advises people to park at St. Paul Catholic Center on 17th Street and start walking at the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, the first house on the extension.

The IU Police Department will restrict traffic at both ends of the Jordan Avenue extension for the event. Officers will also be available to assist with crossing the street at Fee Lane and the Jordan extension for those who will be parking in the Green Lot north of Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Other Halloween events at Indiana University this week include:

  • Mathers Museum Halloween Family Fun Fest: Oct. 31, 4-6 p.m. Crafts, games and hands-on activities will highlight the Mathers Museum's annual Halloween Family Fun Fest. 416 N. Indiana Ave. Free and open to the public.

The final celebration concert will take place in the Jacobs School of Music recital hall on Oct. 31 at 8 p.m.; costumes are welcome.
