Second Indiana Mayors Institute to take place at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS -- Mayors of Indiana cities will learn best practices for controlling health care costs, making creative use of technology and developing sustainability initiatives at the second Mayors Institute, Feb. 5-6 at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
The specialized training session for city leaders is presented by the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. About 40 mayors are expected to participate.
"In these difficult economic times, public officials face difficult challenges in providing the services that citizens expect," said Craig E. Hartzer, clinical professor and director of the Executive Education Program in SPEA at IUPUI. "We are pleased that so many Indiana mayors are taking advantage of the Institute to learn practical lessons about effective governance."
Former South Bend Mayor and Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan spoke at the first Mayors Institute in November 2008.
The Feb. 5-6 Mayors Institute continues a quarterly series that began in November 2008. Participants acquire practical tools for meeting real-life challenges as IU SPEA faculty, IACT staff and guest speakers lead them through advanced problem-solving exercises.
"Our mayors are always eager to learn new and innovative ways of providing high-quality, cost effective public services. The Institute provides a forum for this valuable exchange of ideas," said IACT Executive Director Matt Greller.
Speakers will include Indiana Mayors Norman Yoder of Auburn, Shawna Girgis of Bedford and Larry Haag of Washington; former Fort Wayne Mayor Graham Richard; Fort Wayne Controller Pat Roller; SPEA faculty members Hartzer, Kurt Zorn and Clint Oster; IU Associate Vice President for Human Resources Dan Rives; Indiana Economic Development Corp. CEO Mitch Roob; and Carolyn Coleman, director of Federal Relations for the National League of Cities.
