IU Bloomington astronomer testifies before U.S. space policy commission
Achieving a balance between space science and human space exploration should be an important goal of the nation's space policy, IU Bloomington Professor Catherine Pilachowski told the President's Commission on Implementation of U.S. Space Exploration Policy Tuesday (May 4) in Washington, D.C. Pilachowski, the Daniel Kirkwood Chair in Astronomy, was invited to testify at the commission's hearings in her capacity as president of the American Astronomical Society, and she spoke on behalf of the nation's astronomers. Celebrated pianists Andre Watts and Arnaldo Cohen to join IU School of Music faculty
The IU School of Music announced the appointments Thursday (May 6) of two of the world's greatest living pianists, André Watts and Arnaldo Cohen, to its faculty. Watts will fill the newly created Jack I. and Dora B. Hamlin Endowed Chair in Music. He and Cohen will begin teaching at the school in the fall. Full story

Loren Rieseberg elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences
Loren Rieseberg, Distinguished Professor of Biology at IU Bloomington, has been elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. The plant geneticist and evolutionary biologist joins a roll of past winners that includes Benjamin Franklin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein. Full story

Informatics Laboratory Program seen as key to success of Life Sciences Initiative
The head of an Indianapolis commercial laboratory says he knows the key to the success of his company and the Central Indiana Life Sciences Initiative: an IUPUI School of Informatics student intern and others like him whose skills bridge the divide between science and information technology. The intern, said Dr. Michael Evans, chief executive officer of AIT Laboratories, offers what Evans wants most: the promise of being able to handle huge amounts of data securely, quickly, accurately and completely. "I look at it from my company's standpoint," Evans said. "What's going to give my company the edge? The School of Informatics' Laboratory Informatics Graduate Program at IUPUI is going to make me unique." Full story

IU joins ORAU consortium
IU has been accepted as a member of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities consortium. ORAU is leveraging the scientific strength of 91 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies and private industry. Full story

IU Bloomington criminal justice professor honored for book about religion and adolescence
Roger J. R. Levesque, professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at IU Bloomington, recently received the Society for Research on Adolescence Outstanding Book Award for his book, Not by Faith Alone: Religion, Law and Adolescence (New York University Press, 2002). Not by Faith Alone explores the place of religious faith in adolescent development. The book looks at how matters of faith necessarily serve as powerful positive influences on adolescents, as well as how they can become destructive and lead to personal and social harm. Full story

For SPEA Students, Meeting with Governor, Mayor Goes with Class
Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan slipped into his chair, looked at 13 IUPUI School of Public and Environmental Affairs students seated around the conference table in his State House office, and said the words many in Indiana would pay dearly to hear: "this meeting is yours." For more than an hour, the students in SPEA's Indiana Leadership Program had the undivided attention of the state's chief executive as they discussed their internship experiences working for local and state agencies and nonprofit organizations. Two School of Music students tune up for solo debuts in New York City
The bright city lights will shine on two of Indiana University's most promising young musicians -- double bassist DaXun Zhang, shown above, and violinist Fabian Wettstein -- when they make their solo debuts in New York City this month. For the two IU School of Music students, it's an opportunity to further their music education and to showcase their burgeoning talent in a city that always has its eyes open for the next big star. Jeff Overton earns fourth consecutive Big Ten Golfer of the Week award
IU men's golfer Jeff Overton earned his fourth consecutive Big Ten Golfer of the Week award after winning his fifth individual title of the season at the Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational on May 1-2. Overton shares the award this week with Greg Pieczynski of Penn State. The Indianapolis Star profiled Overton in Thursday's edition. IU's report

Hoosier women's tennis team selected For NCAA championships
The No. 21 IU women's tennis team was selected as an at-large team to the 64-team field of the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. The Hoosiers will make their 21st appearance in the National Championships over the last 26 years. Full story
