Cambridge scholar to deliver Snyder Lecture Tuesday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 6, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Richard G. Fentiman, a University of Cambridge legal scholar, will deliver the 2009 Snyder Lecture at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.
Fentiman will present "Trading Debts — A European Solution?: Addressing the Fallout from the U.S. Mortgage Crisis," on Tuesday, April 7, at noon in the Moot Court Room. His talk is free and open to the public.
Hannah Buxbaum, assistant dean for research and professor at the law school, said Fentiman's presentation will provide a unique look at the worldwide effects of the current economic crisis.
"With leaders of the G-20 having just met in London to discuss the global economic situation, Dr. Fentiman's presentation is very timely," Buxbaum said. "This will be an opportunity to hear about the effects of the U.S. mortgage crisis beyond our own borders, and about the steps other countries are taking to address them."
Fentiman is a reader in private international law at the University of Cambridge, and a fellow of Queens' College in Cambridge. He previously practiced full time as a solicitor and is currently a consultant to the City law firm of Allen & Overy. There he advises on conflict of problems arising in commercial practice and is developing the firm's internal training program.
An expert in private international law, Fentiman is the author of Foreign Law in English Courts: Pleading, Proof, and Choice of Law.
The Snyder Lectures are held in memory of Dr. Earl Snyder, a 1947 Indiana University law graduate, and serve as a unique partnership between the University of Cambridge and the IU Maurer School of Law. The annual lectures are held alternately in England and Bloomington, and the Snyder Visiting Scholarship allows one IU Maurer Law student per year to spend three months at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge.
