BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Bush administration has taken several steps, the latest on Monday (Sept. 22), to make it easier for religious organizations to receive federal funding for a variety of social welfare programs. Scholars at a conference at Indiana University Bloomington on Oct. 3-4 will examine how well old and new providers of social services are evaluated and what may account for any differences in the outcomes they achieve.

Maureen Pirog, a professor in IU's School of Public and Environmental Affairs and co-director of the Institute for Family and Social Responsibility; and George von Furstenberg, James H. Rudy Professor of Economics, are hosting the conference, "Evaluation Methods and Practices Appropriate for Faith-Based and Other Providers of Social Service."

Conference sessions will be 2-3:30 and 4-5:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:30-10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-noon on Saturday. All sessions will take place in Wylie Hall on the Bloomington campus. Social service providers, administrators and analysts from the Bloomington area are welcome to attend at no cost.

The last of the four sessions will feature a roundtable discussion chaired by John Stanfield, professor of African American and African Diaspora studies, joined by Pirog and James M. Walker, IU professor of economics, with special guest Moya Andrews, IU dean of the faculties, whose Multidisciplinary Ventures and Seminars Fund provided grant support for this conference.

To register, social service professionals should send an e-mail with their credentials to vonfurst@indiana.edu by Tuesday (Sept 30).
