BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Top students and faculty at Indiana University will benefit from the selection of Indiana University as a "First Wave" participant in a new Sony scholarship program.
Sony Electronics, with the support of Intel, has invited Indiana University as part of a select group of institutions, to participate in the program whereby select students and faculty are awarded grants that will provide the tools necessary to continue their academic excellence.
The scholarship program supports Empowering People, Indiana University's strategic plan for information technology by fostering faculty excellence, enhancing student success, and making available abundant teaching and learning technology resources.
"Indiana University is dedicated to empowering the best and the brightest with the tools they need to advance teaching and learning. Sony's expertise in digital media products and solutions will help in reaching our goal," noted Brad Wheeler, IU vice president for information technology and CIO.
As part of the award, five outstanding Indiana University students meeting certain financial and academic requirements will be awarded a Sony VAIO notebook computer and additional technology. Two full-time, tenure-track faculty will also be awarded a Sony VAIO notebook computer and additional devices to facilitate research, teaching, and learning. The details of the nomination process will be announced later this fall.
"Technology is a huge part of the learning process today," said Mike Abary, senior vice president of Sony Electronics. "We understand the added pressures students and faculty have during these tough economic times, and want to help outstanding individuals focus on what's really important -- education."
