'Above and Beyond' is theme for African American Arts Institute's 2009-10 season

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's African American Arts Institute has announced its concert season for 2009-10, which has been given the theme "Above and Beyond."

Upcoming events featuring the the institute's three ensembles include the annual Potpourri of the Arts on Dec. 5 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E Kirkwood Ave., and the African American Dance Company's studio concert on Dec. 10 at Willkie Auditorium, 150 N. Rose Ave. The IU Soul Revue will return to perform at Bear's Place, 1316 E. 3rd St., on Nov. 18.

"We are proud to have been serving the community for 35 years with the commitment to celebrating and fostering arts in the African American tradition," said Charles E. Sykes, the AAAI's executive director. "We are preparing for yet another exciting year ahead. Please join us as we continue to contribute to the cultural diversity of Indiana University by preserving, promoting and celebrating African American arts traditions."

Tickets for each show will be available at the door. Tickets for the Potpourri of the Arts will go on sale on Nov. 15 at the Sunrise Box Office, 114 E Kirkwood Ave., in downtown Bloomington.

The African American Dance Company exemplifyies keen vigorous expression, eloquence and class while capturing and conveying the spirit of dance styles of the African Diaspora. The company's repertoire includes original choreography in a fusion of modern, jazz, African and Latin American dance styles. Former members of the dance company have achieved success as professional performers in the Broadway musical Rent and in the Austin Powers movies.

The African American Choral Ensemble offers inspirational, spiritually uplifting music that also preserves the legacy of African American choral music through transformative interpretations of this unique American art form. The choral ensemble features a broad repertoire including spirituals, folk forms, traditional and contemporary gospel music, and formally composed works by African American composers.

The IU Soul Revue exhibits the timeless sounds of R&B, soul, funk, and contemporary urban black popular music, as delivered by its commanding male and female vocal ensembles, powerful horn line and outstanding rhythm section.
