Van Puymbroeck receives national award for scholarship

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Marieke Van Puymbroeck, assistant professor in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies in Indiana University's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, was honored by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) at its annual conference in Minneapolis. She received the organization's Scholarly Achievement Award for her contributions to the literature in therapeutic recreation.
Prominent among Van Puymbroedk's research studies have been those involving older adults and the therapeutic benefits of yoga and Pilates programs. She has more than 40 refereed publications to her credit, with her research appearing in the most prestigious research journals of her profession as well as in highly regarded interdisciplinary journals, such as the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development.
Van Puymbroeck was nominated for the Scholarly Achievement Award by David Austin, professor emeritus in the School of HPER. He wrote: "Dr. Van Puymbroeck has contributed significantly to the knowledge of our profession. She is a scholar of the first magnitude. We are fortunate to have her as a major scholar in therapeutic recreation."
Former recipients of ATRA's Scholarly Achievement Award include Bryan McCormick, associate professor in the Department of Park, Recreation and Tourism Studies. He received the award in 2001.
