BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Law students from around the world will have the opportunity to study American and international legal subjects as part of the IU Maurer School of Law's inaugural Summer Law Institute class.

Beginning in early July, the Law School will welcome law students currently enrolled in law programs outside the United States to a five-week program that allows them to earn up to eight course credits, most of which can be transferred to the Maurer School should they matriculate into its Master of Laws degree program. Participants who successfully complete their coursework will earn a Certificate in American and Comparative Law.

"Our new Summer Law Institute will give international students a short but in-depth window into an American law school environment," Assistant Dean for International Programs Lesley Davis said. "For an international student curious about pursuing a law degree here in the United States, this is the perfect environment for them to discover the countless opportunities that exist not only at the IU Maurer School of Law, but at Indiana University and the Bloomington community."

Students enrolled in the institute can take a maximum of eight course credits. Initial course offerings will include Introduction to the American Legal System, Introduction to American and International Business Law, International and Cross-Cultural Negotiations, and Legal English. All courses will be taught by members of the IU Maurer School of Law's faculty.

During the duration of the program, participants will also be exposed to real-world applications of American law through several study trips.

"With Indianapolis and Chicago both just short drives away, students at the institute will see American law in action in both private law firms and government agencies," Davis said. "We want to ensure every participant gets as much experience and exposure with American law as they possibly can during their course of study at IU."

Indiana University has made arrangements for on-campus housing and meal plans for all who register to attend the institute. Students enrolled in a six-credit hour program will pay $8,142 while the eight-credit hour program costs $10,856. Room and board rates have been set at $1,000 for the five-week program. The registration deadline is Feb. 1. Students interested in applying can visit the Summer Law Institute Web site at https://law.indiana.edu/degrees/graduate/requirements.shtml#Summer.
