FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 22, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER), IU Alumni Association and Office for Women's Affairs will co-sponsor an annual awards banquet to honor two distinguished women as part of National Girls and Women in Sport Day (NGWSD) celebrations. The women also will be recognized Sunday during the IU women's basketball game.
Saturday's (Feb. 27) awards banquet will be held at 6 p.m. in the Peterson Room of the Indiana University Foundation. School of HPER alum Mildred Ball will deliver the keynote address.
Judith Campbell, who received a Master of Education and Doctorate of Physical Education from the School of HPER, is the recipient of the 2010 Anita Aldrich Distinguished Alumni Award. Campbell received her doctorate from the School of HPER in 1978 and has spent most of her professional career as professor in the area of physical education at Indiana State University, from where she is now retired. In 1972, Campbell was selected to serve on the National Advisory Council for Special Olympics Inc. and was appointed regional director of Special Olympics over five states by the Kennedy Foundation. In 1970, she also co-founded of Special Olympics Indiana, and has developed and designed physical education curriculum used in K-12 schools in Indiana. Her awards and accolades are countless, and her dedication and lifelong contributions to the health and fitness of youth have influenced hundreds of thousands of young people.
The award is named after Anita Aldrich, former chairperson and interim dean of the School of HPER. The award honors alumni who demonstrate positive influence and contributions in fields related to girls and women's sports, fitness and healthy lifestyles. The award also recognizes outstanding achievements in professional excellence, service to the community and loyalty to IU.
Tatiana Kolovou, who received a Bachelor of Science from the School of HPER in 1989 and lectures at the Kelley School of Business, is the recipient of the 2010 Office for Women's Affairs Award for Excellence in Support of Women in Sports Award. Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Kolovou got involved in competitive swimming in her early teenage years after having back fusion surgery. Swimming raised her curiosity for the field of sports science and after reading legendary IU swim coach and School of HPER professor Doc Counsilman's book of The Science of Swimming, she knew that the United States was the place that would foster her interest in science. She eventually earned her degree in exercise science and was able to learn from Counsilman first hand through various coaching ventures.
Locally, she has been teaching group fitness classes for the past 20 years for community members, IU faculty, staff and students. She inspires young IU students to find their best self through her role as a lecturer in business communication at the Kelley School of Business. Kolovou has been hired by large fitness manufacturing companies (Star Track, Nautilus and Schwinn) to design educational programs and deliver trainings all over the world -- she has spread the word of health and fitness to more than 15 countries. Through the years, her personal training efforts have expanded from swimming to triathlons. Last summer Kolovou qualified to compete in the World Triathlon Championships for Team USA. She will be traveling to Budapest, Hungary, in September for the competition.
Campbell and Kolovou will be honored at half-time at the IU women's basketball game on Sunday, Feb. 28, as part of IU's NGWSD celebration. The 4 p.m. game against Penn State will be broadcast live on the Big 10 Network. Girls and women are invited to attend the game to celebrate the successes of women and girls in sports. Girl Scouts are invited to attend and if they come in their uniform, the first 4,000 scouts will receive a Indiana Athletics Patch.
The NGWSD was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1986 to honor female athletic achievement and recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. Pre-game activities at the IU women's basketball game will include exhibits and activities for girls highlighting opportunities and experiences available in sports and fitness.
School of HPER alum Mildred Ball will be the keynote speaker for this year's event. Ball has spent 20 years as assistant commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. She was one of the co-founders of the Neal-Marshall Alumni Club and has served in many capacities with both the School of HPER and the IU Alumni Association, including the IUAA Executive Council. Ball continues to serve as a member of the IU HPER Alumni Board, the Dean's Associates, and the IU Athletics Council. She also has a Master of Science in Secondary Education degree from Purdue University.
Past keynote speakers include:
- 2009 - Birch Bayh, former U.S. senator
- 2008 - Peggy Martin, volleyball coach at University of Central Missouri
- 2007 - Buffy Filippell, 2006 Anita Aldrich Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient
