Step up for sustainability -- it's IU's first Foot Power Parade
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 5, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With Earth Day just around the corner, the Residence Halls Association at Indiana University Bloomington is stepping up the excitement with a parade. The First Annual Foot Power Parade will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, kicking off from behind Foster Quad on North Fee Lane before proceeding through student residence areas on the campus.
"There's never been anything like this before in IU's campus," said Aarthi Devanathan, director of environmentalism for the Residence Halls Association. "I wanted to show students that 'going green' isn't only about changing your light bulbs to CFLs and recycling. It can also be something fun, like a parade."
The timing is aimed to get students excited about Earth Day, which takes place the following week, and related activities. The parade will take place during the final stretch for IU's Energy Challenge, a competition among residence halls, fraternities and sororities, and academic buildings; and it's on the morning of the same day as residence-hall celebrations Collins Fest and Central Palooza.
Starting from Foster, the parade will go east on Law Lane, south on Jordan Avenue, east on 10th Street past Wright and Teter residence halls, south on Sunrise Drive, east on Seventh Street, south on Rose Avenue past Willlkie, west on Jones Drive and finish at Forest Quad.
"There are a lot of end-of-the-year, sustainability-oriented activities occurring," Devanathan said. "We wanted to have something that students can enjoy in the morning without taking away from their evening."
The goal is for the parade to become an annual, signature event for the Residence Halls Association, engaging students who live in the residence halls and celebrating their commitment to sustainability. For more information, call 812-855-7426 or e-mail adevanat@indiana.edu.
