IU commencement ceremonies set for May 8-14

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A total of 15,639 graduates will be eligible for degrees from Indiana University during May commencement ceremonies at eight campuses. IU commencement week will start in Bloomington on May 8 and conclude at IU East on May 14.

Former Indiana first lady Judy O'Bannon will address graduates, friends and family members at two ceremonies on the Bloomington campus on May 8. IU will award 7,121 degrees during the morning and afternoon ceremonies at Assembly Hall. The morning ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and the afternoon ceremony at 3 p.m.

There are 1,786 Purdue University degrees that also will be conferred during the ceremonies on IU campuses. Other IU commencement ceremonies and the number of graduates eligible for degrees, including Purdue University degrees awarded on campuses that have Purdue programs, are:

• IUPUI, May 9 at 3 p.m. at the RCA Dome. Degrees will be awarded to 4,936 students, including 3,982 from IU and 864 from Purdue. This number also includes graduates from the IU Columbus facility, where there are 39 IU graduates and 51 Purdue graduates.
• IU Southeast, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the IUS Amphitheater. Degrees will be awarded to 1,088 students, including 1,053 from IU and 35 from Purdue.
• IU Kokomo, May 11 at 11 a.m. at the east side of the Kelly Student Center. Degrees will be awarded to 515 students, including 464 from IU and 51 from Purdue.
• IU South Bend, May 11 at 6 p.m. in the Joyce Center at the University of Notre Dame. Degrees will be awarded to 1,095 students, including 1,065 from IU and 30 from Purdue.
• IPFW, May 12 at 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne's Memorial Coliseum. Degrees will be awarded to 1,630 students, including 906 from IU and 724 from Purdue.
• IU Northwest, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Genesis Center in Gary. Degrees will be awarded to 762 IU students.
• IU East, May 14 at 6 p.m. in the Tiernan Center at Richmond High School. Degrees will be awarded to 278 students, including 247 from IU and 31 from Purdue.

For Bloomington, the number of graduates includes degree candidates for May, June and August, and graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded from January 2004 to July 2004. For other campuses, the figures include degree recipients from December 2003 and candidates for May, June and August 2004. The numbers also include graduate students whose degrees have been or will be awarded during the 2003-04 academic year.

Nine individuals will receive honorary degrees at five IU campuses. They are:

• IU Bloomington: Haydn Murray, professor emeritus of geological studies, Doctor of Science; and Judy O'Bannon, former first lady of the state of Indiana, Doctor of Humane Letters.
• IUPUI: Lehman Adams, dentist, educator and public servant, Doctor of Science; Ruth Lilly, philanthropist, Doctor of Humane Letters; Robert Wood Lynn, former senior vice president of the Lilly Endowment, Doctor of Humane Letters; and Peggy Thomson, volunteer and community activist, Doctor of Humane Letters.
• IU Kokomo: Tavis Smiley, host of nationally broadcast Tavis Smiley on the Public Broadcasting Service and The Tavis Smiley Show on National Public Radio, Doctor of Humane Letters.
• IU Northwest: Joseph Stiglitz, professor of finance and economics, Columbia University, Doctor of Laws.
• IU South Bend: Jeffrey Gibney, executive director of the South Bend Heritage Foundation, Doctor of Humane Letters.
