BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Press, in partnership with the Africa Peace and Conflict Network and the West African Research Association, will launch the African Conflict & Peacebuilding Review (ACPR) in early 2011. It will be edited by Abu Bakarr Bah at Northern Illinois University, with the assistance of Mark Davidheiser (Nova Southeastern University), Tricia Redeker Hepner (University of Tennessee), and Niklas Hultin (Swarthmore College) and published twice a year.

ACPR will be an interdisciplinary forum for creative and rigorous studies of conflict and peace in Africa and for discussions between scholars, practitioners, and public intellectuals in Africa, the United States, and other parts of the world. It will include a wide range of theoretical, methodological, and empirical perspectives on the causes of conflicts and peace processes including, among others, cultural practices relating to conflict resolution and peacebuilding, legal and political conflict preventative measures, and the intersection of international, regional, and local interests and conceptions of conflict and peace.

The journal will take a holistic view of peace and conflict and will focus not only on large-scale international conflict and armed conflict but also peace and conflict dynamics at other levels -- e.g., interpersonal, intra-group, and inter-group -- and dispute settlement through customary law and cultural practices. Its scope will encompass the entire African continent, and it will incorporate works on all of its areas.

In addition to research articles, briefings, and book and film reviews that will resonate with scholars, policy makers, and practitioners, the journal will include podcasts and photos essays that are suitable for teaching and public discourse and are intended to make high-quality scholarship engaging and easy to use in the classroom.

The Africa Peace and Conflict Network (APCN), a professional association of scholars, professionals and activists dedicated to constructive change and peacebuilding in the African world, was founded in 2006. Its members are active in conflict analysis and resolution research, training, and practice. Its work encompasses negotiations, alternative dispute resolution and other areas related to conflict prevention and management such as development, relief, governance, policing and law.

The West African Research Association (WARA), established in 1989, promotes scholarly research on West Africa and the Diaspora to foster scholarly exchange among researchers in the region and between them and their counterparts outside of the continent. It recently launched the West African Peace Initiative whose activities include international conferences, a fellowship program, and a journalism institute.

Indiana University Press was founded in 1950 and is today recognized as a major, international publisher of books and journals in African studies. Its publications are dedicated to exploring the richness, vitality, and vibrancy of life in Africa. The Press's current African studies book series include African Epics, which gathers materials from diverse traditional and contemporary oral sources; African Expressive Cultures, which highlights the variety of the expressive arts; African Systems of Thought, which surveys the intellectual, social, and philosophical landscape; and Global African Voices, which publishes works of original fiction in translation from African writers the world over.

Its African studies serials include Africa Today, a quarterly edited at Indiana University that has been at the forefront in publishing Africanist, reform-minded scholarly research on a full range of political, economic, and social issues for almost 60 years; and Research in African Literatures, the premier journal of African literary studies worldwide, which is published quarterly in cooperation with the Ohio State University.
