BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A 23-year veteran of higher education fundraising, Dorothy (Dee) Metaj has been named Vice President for IUPUI Development, according to an announcement today by Marti K.S. Heil, senior vice president of the Indiana University Foundation, and Charles R. Bantz, chancellor of IUPUI.

Metaj currently is vice president for development at the Oregon Health and Science University Foundation in Portland. She is responsible for setting strategic direction and day-to-day management of the development program that supports the state of Oregon's only health and research university.

"I am extremely pleased to welcome to IUPUI a leader of Dee Metaj's stature," IUPUI Chancellor Bantz said. "Dee brings to us broad experience in major gift fundraising and the health and life sciences. She already has demonstrated an exceptional understanding of our strengths and character as Indiana's premier urban research university and the ability to work in a multifaceted university," Bantz added.

Metaj has been in development for the health and life sciences programs at the University of Oregon since 2005. She moved there from an 11-year career in fundraising at Michigan State University. At MSU, Metaj served as a senior development director and university planned giving officer, directed the development programs of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and was associate director of corporate and foundation relations.

Among Metaj's responsibilities in her new position will be the direction of the next comprehensive campaign for IUPUI, which will move to its public phase this fall, Heil noted. "Dee will be a key leader in partnering with the IUPUI chancellor, deans and development staff in helping us generate the private gift income that is critical to support IUPUI's bold agenda for the future," she added.

Metaj began her career in fundraising at Olivet College, in Olivet, Michigan. She is a former executive director of Michigan Teen Institute, and director of development and external relations at the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education in Washington, D.C. Metaj earned her bachelor of arts degree in the College of Social Science at Michigan State University. She is a member of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy, the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Metaj's appointment is effective Sept. 27. She succeeds William G. Heller, current Indiana University Foundation vice president of development, who will retire in October.

Marion E. Broome, dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing at IUPUI, chaired the nationwide search for Metaj's position. The search committee included IUPUI deans and development officers, and representatives of the IUPUI administration and the IU Foundation. "Dee Metaj will bring extensive management experience in higher education fundraising to IUPUI. Her exemplary success with university capital campaigns and her collaborative style of leadership will be significant assets as we mature our fundraising program at IUPUI," Broome said of Metaj's appointment.

"I thank the search committee members, under the leadership of Dean Marion E. Broome, for their work. I commend the committee for bringing to us a distinguished senior development professional to join our executive leadership team and lead our IUPUI fundraising initiatives," Bantz concluded.
