BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Dean of Students office at Indiana University Bloomington is starting the 2010-11 school year in a new and improved suite of offices in the Indiana Memorial Union.

"It makes a lot of sense for our office to be in the hub of student life on campus," said Dean of Students Harold "Pete" Goldsmith. "And the Union is certainly the hub of student life at IU Bloomington."

The office moved in mid-August from its former location in Franklin Hall. In the west wing of the IMU, it has more and better laid-out space, easier access for students and proximity to student organizations and activities. There is a comfortable waiting area for visitors along with a large conference room for meetings with division directors and other staff and students.

"The new location at the Indiana Memorial Union will make it easier for students to take advantage of the many essential services offered by the Dean of Students office," said Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson. "The work of the Dean of Students and the Office of Student Affairs is crucial to the success and well-being of our students. The central location of this much improved office space is not only symbolically but also practically important."

The move was made possible when IU Outdoor Adventures vacated the IMU for Eigenmann Hall, where there is better access for parking and for loading camping, hiking and boating gear. The "grad pad," an informal lounge for graduate students, also relocated from the IMU.

The larger and remodeled space allows several services of the Dean of Students office to be united in one location, including the Parents Association. The Veterans Support Services office also moved to the IMU, providing more room in Franklin Hall for Disability Services for Students.

Office space has recently been upgraded or will be improved for several other Division of Student Affairs offices. The Student Ethics and Anti-Harassment Programs office moved last year to 801 N. Jordan Ave., and the Student Advocates Office will soon move to more spacious quarters at Eigenmann Hall. Renovations are planned for Student Legal Services and GLBT Student Services. And the Dean of Students and Student Affairs website is scheduled to be redesigned this fall.

"There are 14 separate offices within the division," Goldsmith said, "but we all have the same goal: to help students be successful and get the most out of their IU experience."
