BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University alumni, students and friends are invited to nearly 20 activities taking place during "Now & Then: Homecoming 2010," Oct. 8-16 in Bloomington.
"The Hoosier football team is off to a great start this season, and we are excited about all of the Homecoming activities planned this year," said Mark Skirvin, senior director of outreach programs at the IU Alumni Association. "We expect more than a thousand participants for this year's Homecoming Nearly Naked Mile charity run on Monday evening (Oct. 11), and we're thrilled to offer an old favorite to Homecoming game-day activities with a Pancakes 'n' Pigskin Homecoming Tailgate Party at Hoosier Village (next to Memorial Stadium) before the football game."
Big Man on Campus, Zeta Tau Alpha's annual philanthropic event celebrating breast cancer survivors, will kick off Homecoming events on Friday (Oct. 8). Male students from a variety of IU organizations will demonstrate their talents at the IU Auditorium, competing for the BMOC title. Cost to attend is $13.
Starting at 5:30 p.m., Friday (Oct. 15), the 52nd annual Homecoming parade will take to the streets featuring marching bands, floats, spirit groups and local Shriners clubs. The parade will travel west down Third Street then north on Indiana Avenue to the Sample Gates. Serving as grand marshal will be Harry Cherry, who graduated from IU in 1938 and is the oldest living Hoosier football player.
After the parade, Sample Gates is the stage for a pep rally to cheer the Hoosiers to a Homecoming victory. The pep rally will feature IU head football coach Bill Lynch, football players, cheerleaders, the Marching Hundred and more.
Get your Hoosier spirit going early on game day, Saturday (Oct. 16) with a special Pancakes 'n' Pigskin Homecoming Tailgate Party. The tailgate runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and features breakfast favorites along with activities and games for all ages, a live pregame radio show with the IU Football Radio Network, performances by the IU cheerleaders and the Marching Hundred, and plenty of Hoosier spirit to get fired up for the big game.
Tailgate tickets cost $15 for adults, $6 for children (ages 12 and younger), and are free for Little Hoosiers (2 and younger) if purchased in advance. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling the IU Alumni Association at 812-855-4958 or online at https://alumni.indiana.edu/eventforms/village/. Tickets purchased on the day of the event cost $15 for all ages. The Pancakes 'n' Pigskin Tailgate Party is sponsored by the IU Alumni Association, IU Foundation, Varsity Club, I-Association and Hoosiers for Higher Education.
Homecoming culminates as the Hoosier football team takes on the Arkansas State Red Wolves at noon at Memorial Stadium. During pregame and halftime ceremonies, the 2010 Homecoming king and queen will be introduced, and trophies will be presented to student groups winning the different Homecoming Spirit Week competitions. The Marching Hundred alumni band and alumnae Red Steppers will perform, and 50-year I-Men will be honored. Tickets for the Homecoming football game may be purchased by calling 866-IUSPORTS.
