BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The IU-Northwestern football game won't be the only contest Saturday (Oct. 30) at Memorial Stadium. Indiana University Athletics will compete against 90 other universities as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Game Day Challenge, a friendly competition to promote waste reduction at football games.

IU Athletics will compete in four of the challenge's five award categories: waste generation, diversion rate, recycling and organics reduction. The participation is part of the Greening Cream & Crimson initiative launched this year by the department.

"IU Athletics has taken a leadership role in campus sustainability as demonstrated by its sponsorship of events like E-Waste Days and the Hoosier-to-Hoosier Sale, by improving energy efficiency and operations in their facilities, and by greening events through the Greening Cream & Crimson initiative," said Bill Brown, director of the IU Office of Sustainability. "Saturday's game provides yet another opportunity for the extended IU community to get in the sustainability game."

"This is an excellent opportunity to bring attention to the importance of sustainability on the IU campus," added Chris Reynolds, senior associate director of athletics. "We're proud to be included on the list of 91 leading universities participating in the Game Day Challenge."

Game day initiatives will include:

Winners and results will be posted on the EPA's Game Day Challenge homepage in November after all numbers are calculated.

"With the help of dedicated student volunteers, we're building a strong foundation for which the Greening Cream & Crimson initiative can flourish. Being involved in the Game Day Challenge will allow us to assess our progress and set future goals," said Isaac Farley, IU Office of Sustainability intern.
