FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nov. 11, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University students and members of the IU and Bloomington community are invited this Saturday (Nov. 13) to attend Gardens for Gaia, a free concert and art showing in support of organic community gardens in the Bloomington area.

The event will take place at 8 p.m. at The Lodge, located at 101 E. Sixth St. in Bloomington. Sponsors include the IU group Students Producing Organics Under the Sun (SPROUTS), a collaborative student and community project focused on teaching environmental education and self-sufficiency through gardening.

Performers will include Jefferson Street Brass, Carpenter 'n Clerk, The Beautiful Lovelies, reggae from Indianapolis's Moor and the Northmen, and Three's Company, a Bloomington-based avant-garde jazz trio. Between sets, local poet and IU professor Ross Gay will read selections from his poetry. Gardens for Gaia will also feature the presentation of a locally produced puppet show, "The Witch, the Cook, and the Bandit."

"It's great seeing so many people in the community getting together and contributing to this project," said Ben Smith, the event's independent organizer and a senior majoring in English at IU. "There are a lot of amazing local artists and musicians who have agreed to create or perform something for the show."

"I think it'll be a fitting tribute to the community gardens," Smith added. Gardens for Gaia is sponsored by Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, SPROUTS (an IU student organization), Oasis Spasis, and the Bloomington Community Orchard -- all local, organic community garden projects

Guests can enjoy the performance at no cost, and drinks will be provided for free. Everyone's encouraged to come wearing plants or garden clothes, and to walk to the show if possible.
