BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- IU Auditorium presents Fiddler on the Roof, the beloved musical about tradition and family, on Feb. 8 and 9 at 8 p.m.
This Tony Award-winning musical has captured the hearts of people all over the world with its universal appeal. Fiddler on the Roof has embarked on its North American Tour, giving audiences a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Jermoe Robbins' original Broadway direction and choreography starring veteran actor John Preece as Tevye.
In the 1905 town of Anatevka in Tsarist Russia, Tevye is wrestling with the new customs of a younger generation while still trying to keep alive the religious traditions of his faith and culture. When his daughters choose suitors who defy his idea of a proper match, Tevye comes to realize that his children will begin traditions of their own. At the story's close, the villagers of Anatevka are forced to leave their homes as even the sturdy mores that have guided everyday life begin to crumble.
Based on the short story "Tevya and His Daughters" by Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof has captured the attention of audiences and critics with its universal appeal. The musical is filled with famous songs such as "If I Were a Rich Man," "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" and "Sunrise, Sunset."
"We are proud to bring the best of Broadway to Bloomington with this heartwarming classic, filled with favorite songs and endearing moments," said Doug Booher, director of IU Auditorium. "This smash hit about the enduring bonds of family is truly timeless."
Fiddler on the Roof debuted to critical acclaim on Broadway in 1964, with music written by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. The musical went on to win 10 Tony Awards, including the 1991 Tony for Best Revival and the 1965 Tony for Best Musical, and later inspired the 1971 Academy Award-Winning film directed by Norman Jewison.
