BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's Collins Living-Learning Center will present "Scientists Are the New Rockstars," a traveling multimedia show exploring the fuzzy and "quarky" lines between hard science, social science and metaphysics with hands-on examples of environmentally sustainable art and technologies. The event is free and open to the public and will take place in the Collins Coffeehouse at the corner of 10th Street and Woodlawn Avenue on Thursday (April 7) from 7-9 p.m.

The program's host, Scott Beibin, emphasizes what he calls "fractalized energetic awareness," a holistic examination of all aspects of technological production -- including resource extraction, manufacturing, distribution and disposal -- with consideration for its environmental and social impact.

Beibin presents a diverse world of projects, ideas, concepts and new discoveries from around the world -- at one point, audience members can even pedal a bicycle to power the show. Each unique show allows audiences to connect through participation in hands-on experiments, immersive storytelling, problem solving, and live guest appearances and webchats with scientist "rockstars." Audience members are then invited to apply the concepts to their own lives.

Inspiration for the program comes from visiting traditions of the past, uncovering the hidden histories of forgotten and suppressed technologies, and exploring projects created by citizen scientist do-it-yourselfers, tinkerers, makers and other scientist rockstars, such as Nikola Tesla, Buckminster Fuller, Vandana Shiva, Paul Stamets, Mitchell Joachim, Natalie Jerimijenko and Ryan Wartena.

The program is sponsored by the Collins Living-Learning Center's student groups Board of Educational Programmers, Arts Council and Environmental Force. For more information, call 812-855-7354 or e-mail ycluver@indiana.edu.
