EDITORS: Australian Ambassador to the U.S., the Honorable Kim Beazley, will deliver a special lecture at Indiana University Bloomington on Thursday (April 7) on the future of Australian-U.S. relations. The lecture will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Room of the Lilly Library, 1200 E. Seventh St., and will be followed by a reception hosted by IU President Michael McRobbie.
A longtime politician and diplomat, Beazley served 27 years (1980-2007) in the Australian House of Representatives. He was leader of the Australian Labor Party and leader of the opposition from 1996 to 2001 and 2005 to 2006. Additionally, he was a minister under Australian Prime Ministers Bob Hawke and Paul Keating and served as deputy prime minister to Keating in 1995-96. He retired from the Parliament of Australia in 2007.
In July 2008 he was appointed chancellor of the Australian National University, a position he held until December 2009. Beazley assumed his current post as ambassador to the U.S. in February 2010.
He is expected to explore several questions during his lecture, including:
- What direction will Australian-U.S. relations take in the coming decades?
- How will the rise of countries such as China and India as regional, and indeed, global powers affect these bilateral relations?
- What issues do the two countries currently face and what are likely to arise in the future.
