BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Broadway's three-time Tony Award-winning musical parody Monty Python's Spamalot will make its Bloomington debut at IU Auditorium on April 27-28 at 8 p.m.
This King Arthur tale pays homage to the classic cult film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which helped bring British comedy to the masses. It portrays the same mockery and spirit of the original film, featuring the Knights of the Round Table and plenty of men in tights, but with some notable additions: up-to-the-minute pop culture references, the Los Angeles Laker Girls and giant wooden rabbits.
The national touring show has been lauded as "the musical for people that don't like musicals." The New Yorker called it "A no-holds-barred smash hit," and The New York Times wrote, "The best new musical to open on Broadway this season!"
Spamalot was created by Eric Idle, a member of the original Monty Python team (who also plays the voice of God), and his frequent collaborator John Du Prez, a composer who has scored more than 20 feature films, including The Life of Brian. This musical features a chorus of hunky men, beautiful show girls, eye-popping sets, lavish costumes and over-the-top production numbers, including "The Song That Goes Like This," "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," and "His Name Is Lancelot," featuring the memorable lyrics, "His name is Lancelot/And in tight pants a lot/He likes to dance a lot."
"Monty Python's Spamalot seizes the stage with an astonishing comedic drive and sense of adventure that surpasses the remarkable legacy of the original film," said Doug Booher, director of IU Auditorium. "This show takes British humor to a new level and redefines the standards of a successful musical parody with a performance that any audience will find incredibly witty and undeniably hilarious."
