BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University announced today (April 13) that Mark Land, currently executive director for corporate communications at Cummins Inc., has been named to the position of associate vice president of university communications for Indiana University, replacing Larry MacIntyre, who will retire on June 30.

Land, a veteran corporate communications executive and former newsroom manager at several daily newspapers in the Gannett newspaper chain, will start his new position on July 1. He will report to Mike Sample, IU's vice president of public affairs and government relations.

IU President Michael A. McRobbie welcomed the appointment of Land.

"Mark Land has the background and experience necessary to help Indiana University effectively communicate with all of our varied audiences," McRobbie said. "I am delighted that he has decided to return to his alma mater in this very important role."

McRobbie also praised MacIntyre for the role he has played at IU for the past seven years.

"No matter what the communication challenge has been, Larry has been the consummate communications professional and a superb spokesman for the university. He will be missed by all of us at IU."

Sample noted that Land will be moving from one strong Indiana institution to another.

"Mark's experiences at Cummins will serve him well at IU," Sample said. "Both are large, important, complex organizations with significant international reputations and diverse audiences to address. Mark has done this very well at Cummins, and we look forward to having him head up IU's communications efforts."

Prior to joining Cummins in 2003, Land was a senior editor and newsroom manager for the Gannett News Corp. at newspapers in New York, Michigan and Indiana. He was assistant managing editor for business news at the Indianapolis Star from 2001 to 2003, and he was executive editor of the Battle Creek Enquirer for three years, from 1998 to 2001. He also worked in key newsroom positions at Gannett-owned newspapers in New York and Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1998.

Over the past decade, Land also has renewed his involvement with Indiana University by serving as an adjunct lecturer in the School of Journalism, teaching classes in reporting and editing, journalism ethics and media relations. He served as a board member of the IU School of Journalism Alumni Association from 2004 to 2009.

"I am honored to be joining Indiana University at this exciting time in its history," Land said. "I look forward to building on the outstanding work that has been done by Larry and his team over the past several years to share the compelling IU story with all our stakeholders.

"I have been extremely fortunate to spend eight enriching years at Cummins, which is one of the premier companies in the country. Still, the chance to come home to IU and to live in Bloomington is nothing short of a dream situation for my family, and we couldn't be more excited."

Land and his wife, Karen (B.A. in art and journalism), will make their home in Bloomington.
