IU President Adam W. Herbert named "Sagamore of the Wabash"
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert has been named a "Sagamore of the Wabash" by outgoing Gov. Joe Kernan.
The award, considered to be the highest honor an Indiana governor bestows, was made on Sunday, Jan. 9, Kernan's last full day as governor.
Kernan said the award was intended to express "the appreciation of all Hoosiers" for Herbert's commitment to IU and the State of Indiana.
"You have distinguished yourself by your humanity in living, your loyalty in friendship, your wisdom in council and your inspiration in leadership," Kernan said.
For more than a half century, Indiana governors have used the Sagamore of the Wabash award to recognize distinguished service and accomplishments by Hoosiers. The term "sagamore" was used by the American Indian Tribes of the northeastern United States to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe to whom the true chief would look for wisdom and advice.
Herbert, who holds master's and doctorate degrees in public administration and urban affairs, is in his second year as IU president. He came to IU from Florida, where he was chancellor of the state's university system from 1998 to 2001.
