Senior administrator William B. Stephan to leave IU for Clarian Health Partners
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A key member of President Adam Herbert's administrative team will be leaving Indiana University in March to accept a senior position with Clarian Health Partners, Indiana's largest health care provider organization.
William B. Stephan, IU vice president for university relations and corporate partnerships, will join Clarian as senior vice president for communications and community relations. Clarian operates three hospitals in Indianapolis -- Methodist, Indiana University and Riley -- with more than 11,000 employees and 1,300 beds.
At IU, Stephan has been responsible for marketing, internal and external communications, media relations and other public outreach activities. He also is the university's chief economic development officer, responsible for developing and executing the university's strategic plan. His new responsibilities at Clarian will be in similar areas.
Herbert said he will miss Stephan's counsel and expertise.
"Bill Stephan has made an immense contribution to Indiana University during his tenure here. He has built an extraordinarily effective publications, marketing and communications infrastructure. He has been a key adviser to me on a number of important initiatives. He has led the effort to develop an economic development strategic plan for IU to assist in addressing Indiana's economic growth and development promotion. We will miss Bill, but look forward to his continuing involvement in a wide range of IU activities."
Stephan said that while he regrets leaving IU, he will be undertaking some new and very attractive challenges at Clarian.
"It has been a great privilege to serve Indiana University and be associated with its remarkable faculty and dedicated administrators these past years," Stephan said. "IU will always be close to my heart."
In his new position, Stephan will be able to maintain contact with some of his IU colleagues. Clarian is a partner with the IU School of Medicine in the operation of Riley and Indiana University hospitals. Clarian manages the facilities, and IU provides the physicians and many of the professional staff.
Stephan came to IU in 2000 after serving five years in the administration of Indianapolis Mayor Steve Goldsmith and three years as president of the Indianapolis Private Industry Council, a not-for-profit workforce development organization.
