BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show 2011 will open on May 20 in the The School of Fine Arts (SoFA) Gallery at Indiana University Bloomington, with contemporary artworks exploring themes related to sex, gender, eroticism, reproduction, sexuality, romantic relationships, the human figure and the politics of sex and gender.

The exhibit, which runs through July 30, features paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, wearable art, metalwork, books, sculpture, fiber art, and video installations. The jurors, Christopher Bedford, chief curator of the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University, SoFA Director Betsy Stirratt, and Garry Milius, associate curator at The Kinsey Institute, chose 130 artworks from 775 submissions. Entries came from 354 professional, amateur and student artists from 36 states and nine countries.

Although this is the sixth annual Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show, the exhibition is marking its third year with the SoFA Gallery.

"The Kinsey Institute is so pleased to have this opportunity to collaborate with the SoFA Gallery each year," said Milius. "It enables us to include so many more artists in our exhibition."

Two awards will be given to artists in the exhibition, a $300 cash prize for "Best in Show", selected by the jurors, and a $200 award for Gallery Visitor's Choice.

"The reception for the juried art show is always a lively event," said Kinsey Institute Curator Catherine Johnson-Roehr. "Many of the featured artists come to Bloomington for the opening, and the gallery visitors are invited to vote for their favorite artwork to receive the People's Choice award."

Gallery hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 12-4 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.
