BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington residence halls will open at 8 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 24) for Move-In Day, marking the beginning of Welcome Week 2011.

With more than 11,000 beds available for the 2011-12 academic year, officials in IU Residential Programs and Services expect to be operating at full capacity. Students will move in from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and opportunities for photography, video and interviews will be made available to media.

During the morning, IU President Michael A. McRobbie, IU First Lady Laurie Burns McRobbie, IU Executive Vice President and IU Bloomington Provost Karen Hanson and Dean of Students Harold 'Pete' Goldsmith will visit the halls of residence to extend a welcome to new students and their parents. They will travel in golf carts, be available for photos with parents and students, and distribute IU decals.

That afternoon, President McRobbie and Provost Hanson will preside over the official freshman induction ceremonies, which will be held at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at IU Auditorium. During the ceremonies, entering students and their families will learn to sing the IU Alma Mater, get acquainted with IU ceremonial traditions and receive a personal welcome from university officials and other distinguished guests. The traditional Induction Picnic will follow each ceremony behind the Lilly Library and Woodburn Hall, which are adjacent to IU Auditorium.

During the morning move-in activities, IU Associate Vice President for University Communications Mark Land will be on site to coordinate media requests. Media wishing to photograph President McRobbie as he greets new students and their parents should contact Land at 812-322-9016. He will be able to identify the president's location as he moves from dorm to dorm.

Also, several new students have agreed to be interviewed by media. Those media wanting to talk with students should contact Director of University Communications Ryan Piurek, preferably in advance of Wednesday, to make arrangements. He can be reached at 812-855-5393 or rpiurek@indiana.edu.

This year's Move-In Day is marked by the re-opening of the Briscoe Shoemaker Tower, part of the first phase of a $42 million renovation project at Briscoe Residence Center, located at 1225 N. Fee Lane. In its new configuration, Shoemaker Tower will be home to 345 students in a variety of suite-style living arrangements.

Briscoe Shoemaker features four-person suites with shared living rooms and baths, two- and three-person suites with shared baths and two-person and single rooms with private baths. It also is home to the Fitness and Wellness Living Learning Center, which includes a fitness area and dance studio, as well as to classrooms, a dining service, a student government office and a Hutton Honors College Residential Community.

All rooms are fully furnished and include air conditioning, fire protection/sprinkled smoke detection, card-access security, cable TV service, wireless Internet service, utilities and insulated windows. Each floor will have a room equipped with eco-friendly washers and dryers. Rooms in Briscoe Shoemaker will be available for media to photograph.
