Aug. 31, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Maurer School of Law Dean Lauren Robel is visiting several leading Indian law schools as part of an IU effort to explore educational partnerships among the university, Indiana and India.
The purpose of the dean's visit, which coincides with IU President Michael A. McRobbie's 11-day trip to India that began Aug. 27, is to explore the globalization of legal education with scholars and practitioners at Indian law schools and law firms. During the trip, Robel will speak at a conference sponsored by IU and Jindal Global University (JGU) titled "Globalization, Professional Education, and Knowledge Development in the 21st Century." IU and JGU have been collaborating on student exchanges, internships and joint education initiatives.
Robel will also speak to students and faculty at the National Law University in Delhi and meet with officials of the National Law School of Bangalore and NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad. In addition, she will meet with the governor of Karnakata (where Bangalore is located) and with the former chief justice of the Indian Supreme Court. Robel will join IU President McRobbie at an event launching IU's newest alumni chapter in New Delhi on Sept. 3.
"The impact of globalization on legal education is profound, and there is no better place than India for sharing ideas and trends," Robel said. "I am looking forward to expanding our existing relationships with JGU and creating new academic partnerships." Nine Indiana University law students participated in internships in the summer of 2011.
Accompanying Robel from the Maurer School of Law are Professors Jayanth Krishnan and Susan Williams. Krishnan is professor of law and Charles L. Whistler Faculty Fellow; director of the India Initiative at the law school's Center on the Global Legal Profession, and co-director of the IU Center for Law, Society and Culture. He is an expert on the Indian legal system.
Williams is the Walter W. Foskett Professor of Law and associate director of the law school's Center for Constitutional Democracy. Her expertise centers on training reform leaders of emerging countries in constitutionalism and the parliamentary process and on the role of women in developing nations. Krishnan and Williams will also speak at the Jindal conference.
Robel is dean and Val Nolan Professor of Law at the Maurer School of Law and president-elect of the Association of American Law Schools, an association of more than 160 law schools that provides improvement of the legal profession through legal education.
