Hoosier to Hoosier raises more than $17,000 for worthy causes
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 23, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The second annual Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale (H2H) raised $17,420 for United Way of Monroe County, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County and sustainability funds with Indiana University and the City of Bloomington.
The sale, which took place Aug. 20, sold approximately 27 tons of donations from students living in residence halls, fraternities, sororities and off-campus housing. An estimated 1,800 shoppers attended sale day, walking away with furniture, small appliances, clothes and other household items. More than 200 volunteers assisted with the sale planning and preparations.
"We're thrilled. Our final figure for H2H was nearly double what we did last year," said Jacqui Bauer, sustainability coordinator for the City of Bloomington.
H2H also contributed food donations and items that could not be sold to other charitable organizations.
"I couldn't imagine a better outcome. The city and university were able to reduce waste and get it to people who need it. Even donations we couldn't sell have gone to Hoosier Hills, Embrace, Teacher's Warehouse and Goodwill," said Alexi Lamm, IU Office of Sustainability intern and sale coordinator.
The sale organizers are now distributing the funds. Emilie Rex, assistant director with the IU Office of Sustainability, presented a check to United Way of Monroe County for $8,884 at the drive kickoff held Sept. 16. Steve Akers, associate director of environmental operations for IU Residential Programs and Services, will present a check for $6,794 to Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County at the next Bloomington Green Drinks gathering. Remaining proceeds from the event will be split between sustainability funds with the city and IU.
H2H is a reuse program that aims to divert reusable items from the landfill during student move-out, prevent additional resource consumption by selling collected items to students and community members, and raise funds for local charities and other organizations. It is a partnership among United Way of Monroe County, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, the City of Bloomington, IU Athletics, the IU Office of Sustainability and IU Residential Programs and Services.
