Media Advisory: IU campus Habitat Build begins Thursday and continues through Oct. 8

EDITORS: Beginning this Thursday (Sept. 29) and every day through Oct. 8, students, faculty and staff from Indiana University and its Kelley School of Business and campus visitors will work together on a Habitat for Humanity project that will provide a new home for a Bloomington family. Media are invited each day, when different groups are expected to participate.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Starting Thursday, (Sept. 29), a joint effort of Indiana University and the Kelley School of Business, Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County and Whirlpool Corp. will build a house next to the home of the IU Alumni Association.

The building blitz outside the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center, 1000 E. 17th St., will culminate with a dedication ceremony on Oct. 8 and provide Bloomington's Tora and Clarence Knapp and their two children with a home to call their own. The following day, on Oct. 9, the house will be moved to its permanent location elsewhere in Bloomington.

The build will coincide with home football games against Penn State University on Saturday (Oct. 1) and the University of Illinois on Oct. 8. The Kelley School's Institute for Social Impact (KISI) is coordinating the build with the local Habitat chapter.

Building shifts each day will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1 to 5 p.m. The keys will be presented to the Knapps at a dedication ceremony at noon on Oct. 8, two and a half hours prior to the game with the University of Illinois.

Participants in the build will come from throughout the campus and include IU alumni and special guests. Below is a listing of milestones for the project and also of participants who are planning to work with students each day:

• Thursday and Friday (Sept. 29-30) -- Ted Dosch, vice chair of Habitat for Humanity International; Karen Hanson, IU Bloomington provost and executive vice president; Roy Templin, an IU alumnus and chief financial officer of Whirlpool Corp., and other Whirlpool managers; other corporate guests involved in the Kelley School's CFO Roundtable program.
• Also on Friday (Oct. 30) -- IU Alumni Association staff, including executive director J T. Forbes; Debbie Zipes, executive director of the Indiana Afterschool Network; and Harold "Pete" Goldsmith, IU dean of students.
• Saturday, Oct. 1 -- The house will be framed and tresses set.
• Monday, Oct. 3 -- Roofing will be done by students and staff from the Kelley School of Business
• Tuesday, Oct. 4 -- Matt Auer, dean of the Hutton Honors College and its student and staff.
• Friday, Oct. 7 -- Dan Smith, dean of the Kelley School; and Munirpallam Venkataramanan, associate dean of academic programs; and students from the Kelley Honors and Civic Development Leadership programs.
• Saturday, Oct. 8 -- Whirlpool Corp. Chief Executive Officer and IU alumnus Jeff Fettig and students from the IU Wells Scholars Program.

The build is part of Whirlpool-sponsored Habitat builds taking place throughout the United States in 2011. Whirlpool Corp., one of Habitat for Humanity International's top corporate partners, has sponsored more than 100 homes and served more than 82,000 families around the world since the partnership began in 1999. In addition, Whirlpool Corp. also donates a range and Energy Star-qualified refrigerator to every Habitat for Humanity House built in North America.

Those traveling to campus for Habitat activities, including on Oct. 1 and 8, should be aware of ongoing construction at the 45/46 Bypass and expect traffic delays.
