IU distinguished alumni to present campus seminars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two recipients of the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award will present public seminars Thursday (Oct. 20) on the IU Bloomington campus.

Carolyn K. Reidy, president and CEO of Simon and Schuster Inc., will give a talk at 4 p.m. in the President's Room of the University Club in the Indiana Memorial Union as part of the Department of English's "How To Do things With English" series. The series, which features alumni of the department who have interesting and successful careers, has proven very popular with students.

Reidy explored the writer-reader relationship as a student at IU Bloomington, where she earned her M.A. in English in 1974 and her Ph.D. in English in 1982. "The basic role of a publisher is still to help authors find their audience, which goes back to the writer-reader relationship I studied at IU," she said.

Vice Adm. Adam Robinson Jr. will lead a discussion from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, 618 E. Third St. As part of the Poynter Center's Healthcare Ethics Seminar series, he will speak about the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief that the U.S. Navy provided after events such as the 2004 tsunami off the coast of Southeast Asia and the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Robinson, who earned his B.A. in political science from IU Bloomington in 1972, is surgeon general and chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, U.S. Navy. He was the IU commencement speaker in December 2010. In addition to the College's Distinguished Alumni Award, this year he is also receiving IU's Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

"The education that I received at Indiana was truly the sort of very broad liberal arts education that you can't duplicate readily," he said. "It gave me the opportunity to experience a broad spectrum of activities and to interact with a very diverse student body that represented the entire world."

Both talks are free and open to the public. Reidy and Robinson will be honored at the College of Arts and Sciences 2011 Annual Recognition Banquet, along with alumnus Donald H. Fehr, Outstanding Young Alumni Award winner Erin Patrick and Distinguished Faculty Award winner Ellen Ketterson. The banquet will take place Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
