BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The David Linard Trio was chosen as the recipient of the second annual Emerging Jazz Artist Project Award on Monday, Oct. 24, during the David N. Baker Jazz Ensemble concert at the Musical Arts Center of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

The competition, sponsored by Owl Studios of Indianapolis and open to all Jacobs School jazz majors, includes a recording contract, mentoring opportunities with industry professionals, radio and print publicity and promotion and performances, including the 2012 Indianapolis Jazz Festival.

Thirteen submissions featuring three original works for each combo were entered, representing more than 30 individual jazz majors.

A panel of judges from across the country assembled in Indianapolis to select the winning entry and prepare comprehensive written comments for every track of each submission, which will be shared with each student.

This year marked the involvement of the Jacobs School's Recording Arts Department, directed by Professor Konrad Strauss, which provided studio time and engineer expertise to the students while giving them additional valuable recording studio experience.

"I am grateful for the support of Jacobs School of Music Dean Gwyn Richards, David Baker and the jazz faculty, Konrad Strauss and the audio faculty, and Al Hall of Owl Studios in making this possible for a second year," project organizer and assistant professor Brent Wallarab said. "I am absolutely awed by the material all of the 13 applicants submitted this year. That so many students were able to compose and arrange such strong original material, assemble their own groups and rehearse and record at such a high level completely on their own is very moving to me."

"We are so fortunate to have this opportunity," Linard said. "This is all possible because of Brent Wallarab and Owl Studios, and the approval of Dean Richards and the rest of the faculty. We're excited to get to document this group."

The David Linard Trio features Linard, a senior from Indianapolis, on piano; Ben Lumsdaine, a senior from Bloomington, on drums; and Nick Tucker, a graduate student from Indianapolis, on bass.

The three have performed as a backing rhythm section at many Jacobs School functions and as a trio in several area venues. They have been writing and playing original compositions for the past year.

"The David Linard Trio is truly a professional-level group, which will represent IU and Owl Studios in a way that will make us all very proud," Wallarab said. "Additionally, the fact that all three members of the trio are from Indiana is something of which the state can be proud, given its deep and important contribution to jazz."
