BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's student publications in Bloomington have won five Crown Awards, the top honors from Columbia Scholastic Press Association in New York City.

Four Gold Crowns went to IU, for two semesters of the Indiana Daily Student newspaper, for idsnews.com and for Inside magazine. A Silver Crown went to the 2011 Arbutus yearbook.

The Indiana Daily Student then won two Adams Apple awards for best of show at the Spring National College Media Convention -- for best newspaper of its size and for its 9/11 anniversary multimedia presentation on idsnews.com. The namesake of the awards, sponsored by College Media Association, is the late David Adams, IU Student Media director from 1989 to 2006.

Indiana students also won 82 CSPA Gold Circle awards for individual achievement, including 32 first-place awards.

The CSPA honors are bookends to IU's national honors in the fall. The Indiana Daily Student, Arbutus and Inside all won Pacemaker Awards, the top publications honors from Associated Collegiate Press.

Editors in chief for the winning publications were Sarah Brubeck, IDS, fall 2010; Jake Wright, IDS, spring 2011; MJ Slaby, IDS, fall 2011; Sarah Hutchins, Inside magazine 2010-11; and Christine Ashack, 2011 Arbutus.

Published by students for students, the Indiana Daily Student, Inside magazine and Arbutus yearbook are among the nation's most honored collegiate publications, consistently winning top national honors. Student editors are in charge of publications content, with editorial independence granted by the IU Board of Trustees.

The publications and their sites comprise IU Student Media, a self-supporting IU auxiliary in Ernie Pyle Hall with the IU School of Journalism. The Indiana Daily Student, first published in 1867 and becoming daily in 1899, now publishes 15,000 copies per day, with an online readership of more than 230,000 users.
