FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 20, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University students who are moving out of dorms and apartments next month will have a socially and environmentally responsible alternative to throwing their unwanted possessions in the trash.

The Hoosier to Hoosier (H2H) Community Sale will officially kick off its collection of reusable items from students on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22. The sale -- now in its third year -- accepts used clothing, furniture, housewares, books, electronics and nearly everything else except mattresses.

Students wishing to donate items may:

H2H is a reuse program that aims to divert reusable items from the landfill during student move-out. It also prevents wasteful resource consumption by selling collected items to students and community members in order to raise funds for local charities and other organizations. The program allows students to donate reusable items while helping their neighbors in need.

In a new feature for the Hoosier to Hoosier sale, IU's Forest Residence Hall will kick off collections with its Green Your Moveout Party from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1. The event, intended to raise awareness of how to donate reusable items and provide a boost for H2H, will include music and free food.

The party will be set up as a "Stuff the Truck" event, with donations loaded immediately on a truck and delivered for summer storage. All Forest residents and other IU students are invited to participate, and donations will be accepted from any IU student.

The 2012 H2H Community Sale will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 at Gladstein Fieldhouse.

In 2011, H2H collected reusable items from IU's 12 residence halls, nine Greek houses and multiple apartment complexes as well as numerous individual donors. In total, the volume intercepted was equivalent to roughly 27 tons.

In addition, the sale raised more than $17,000 (up from about $10,000 in 2010) for United Way of Monroe County and Habitat for Humanity. Approximately 1,500 students and residents of Bloomington and surrounding communities attended the event. More than 100 volunteers contributed hours on sale day, and dozens more were involved in sale preparations.

H2H is a partnership between the City of Bloomington's Department of Economic & Sustainable Development, Habitat for Humanity, IU Athletics, the IU Office of Sustainability, IU Residential Programs & Services and United Way. Numerous local businesses also play a role.
