BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Press and 25 other academic presses are uniting this week for a blog tour to mark University Press Week, demonstrating the spirit of partnership that characterizes the university press community.

"The blog tour celebrates not only the important contributions of university presses, but also the collaborative spirit of the university press community," said IU Press electronic marketing manager Laura Baich, who conceptualized the tour. "I don't think you could get 26 different companies to help promote one another in any other industry. It's really a testament to how strongly we feel about what we do."

Bloggers will include authors, book review editors, university press staff, interns, booksellers and university press advocates, most notably Bruce J. Miller and Ned Stuckey-French, who led a successful social media campaign to save the University of Missouri Press earlier this year. Harvard University Press kicked off the tour today, and it will continue coast to coast, with stops in Canada and Hawaii, before ending at Oregon State University Press.

The tour hits the IU Press blog on Thursday, Nov. 15, with a post by former intern Nico Perrino. The IU Press blog was established in 2007 and named one of the 100 Blogs That Will Make You Smarter in 2008. A complete schedule of the tour can be found online.

This year's University Press Week marks the 75th anniversary of the American Association of University Presses. Founded in 1937, the association has been a model of progress and a cohesive spirit for 75 years. In summer 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed a University Press Week "in recognition of the impact, both here and abroad, of American university presses on culture and scholarship." That influence continues today, as does the increasing vitality of university press publishing programs, the many ways and means by which works are now produced and distributed, and the urgent need for articulate discourse in times pervaded by sound bites.

American Association of University Presses members produce more than 12,000 works per year, in both print and digital form. Its membership comprises 133 scholarly presses, found in locations ranging from Abilene, Texas, to Toronto and from Kalamazoo, Mich., to Hong Kong.

IU Press currently publishes 29 journals and about 140 books annually, including Quarry Books, an imprint dedicated to regional topics, and Break Away Books, a creative book series focusing on fiction, memoirs, creative nonfiction and poetry with a Midwest connection.

In December, IU Press will release INshort, a new series of digital books focusing on contemporary and historical issues. Titles in the series will feature original content from award-winning authors and will showcase carefully selected excerpts from previously published IU Press books and journals. Books offered in the series will provide discerning readers with short, engaging views of important and compelling topics in multiple formats.
