BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University ranks 16th in the nation among public universities in the market value of its endowment, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers-Commonfund Study of Endowments released today. The annual study gathered data from 831 U.S. colleges and universities for fiscal year 2012.

Of the 69 colleges and universities with endowments of $1 billion or more, 52 experienced a decrease in the market value of their endowments. As of June 30, 2012, the market value of IU's endowment totaled $1.57 billion, up 0.1 percent from fiscal year 2011. Endowment growth is affected by return on investments, by gifts added to the endowment and by distributions made from the endowment.

"Our consistently strong ranking reflects both prudent management and the generosity of our devoted friends and alumni," said Dan Smith, president and CEO of the Indiana University Foundation, which manages the endowment. "In such challenging economic times, we credit the Investment Committee of our Board of Directors and our investment staff with careful planning and a strategic, long-term focus, which will continue to provide vital support for the university for generations to come."

Founded in 1936, the IU Foundation is dedicated to maximizing private-sector support for Indiana University by conducting fundraising campaigns and programs, investing the endowment and providing the centralized infrastructure and services that support these efforts. Designated as the university's central fundraising agency, the foundation partners with and serves all campuses of IU.
