BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Incumbent Indiana University Trustee MaryEllen Kiley Bishop faces a challenge from former state Democratic Party Chair Ann McGovern DeLaney in alumni voting that runs June 1 to 29.

Degree-holders from all IU campuses are eligible to vote for the trustee position. IU graduates elect three of the nine trustees, one each year for a three-year term. The remaining six trustees, including the student board member, are appointed by Indiana's governor.

Bishop, BS'79, JD'82, an Indianapolis attorney who lives in Carmel, has served one term on the board. She has been active in IU organizations for many years, serving on the IU Women's Philanthropy Council, the IU Athletics Committee and the McKinney School of Law board of visitors and as chairwoman of the IU Alumni Association. On the Board of Trustees, she has chaired the external relations committee and served on the facilities and academic affairs committees.

DeLaney, JD'77, also an Indianapolis attorney, has significant university ties as well. She is past president of the Maurer School of Law board of visitors, and a member of the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows, IU Foundation Presidents Circle, Varsity Club and Alumni Association. Among her many civic activities, DeLaney served as a deputy prosecuting attorney for Marion County, ran for lieutenant governor in 1984 and was the first woman to head either political party in Indiana, chairing the state Democratic Party from 1993 to 1995.

A candidate forum will be webcast live at 7 p.m. Monday, June 3, via broadcast.iu.edu. The forum will be moderated by Perry Metz, BA'77, director of radio and television services at IU. Questions for the candidates may be submitted by June 2 to Amy Cope, alumni trustee election coordinator, at truselec@indiana.edu.

For more information about the candidates or to vote online, visit TrusteeElection.iu.edu. Paper ballots are available upon request by calling 812-855-6610.

The Board of Trustees is Indiana University's governing board, its legal owner and final authority.

The IU Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students and friends. As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, serving more than 560,000 graduates worldwide, the IUAA provides many programs and services to its members, nonmember alumni and the university.
