Indiana University announces 2013-14 Kelley Scholars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ten Kelley Scholars from Indiana have been selected by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

The Kelley Scholars, all incoming freshmen this fall who intend to major in business at IU Bloomington, will receive standard tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses and funding for academic activities such as overseas study.

The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its school of business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the gift.

This year's class of Kelley Scholars was selected from a group of more than 400 students admitted to IU who were invited to apply for the program because of their outstanding academic records. The application included references, a high school transcript, several personal statements on a variety of topics and an essay.

The 2012-13 Kelley Scholars are:

• Connor Brashear, the son of Lex and Francine Brashear of Washington, Ind. -- A graduate of Washington High School, he was valedictorian, senior class vice president and a member of the Academic Bowl team, the student council and the varsity soccer team. He was selected as a member of the All-State Academic Team in soccer and was state president and the National Office of Central Region Vice President of DECA.
• Caroline Cronin, the daughter of Jim and Amy Cronin of Westfield, Ind. -- A graduate of Guerin Catholic High School, she was a National Merit Commended Scholar, a National Spanish Exam Silver Level Award winner, a recipient of the Senior Department Award for Performing Arts, a member of the National Honor Society and captain of the Comedy Sportz team Ballet. She also was involved with the theater and choir.
• Joseph Laughlin, the son of Kevin and Carol Laughlin of Fort Wayne, Ind. -- A graduate of Homestead High School, he was an AP Scholar with Honor, editor-in-chief of The Spartana student newspaper and a First Team All-Conference soccer player. He was on the honor roll all four years, and he interned at Monarch Capital Management.
• Lauren Lowry, the daughter of Penny and Orlando Lowry of Indianapolis -- A graduate of Park Tudor School, she was president of the Spanish club, a member of Cum Laude Society, a National Achievements Scholar and a member of the Academic All-Conference team in track and field, holding the conference record in the shot put. She also was co-captain of the cheerleading squad.
• Katelyn McCarthy, the daughter of Darla Gunn of Zionsville, Ind. -- A graduate of Zionsville Community High School.
• Allison Newell, the daughter of Mark and Jeannie Newell of Columbus, Ind. -- A graduate of Columbus East High School, she was captain of the cross country and track teams, captain of the speech team, president of the Spanish National Honor Society and vice president of Key Club. She was a member of the Academic All-State for track and cross country and county most valuable player in cross country. She also was a member of the Westside Community Church Youth Leadership Team.
• Adam Reddigari, the son of Sara and Sesha Reddigari of Indianapolis -- A graduate of Lawrence North High School, he was a member of the National Honor Society, the soccer team and the orchestra. He received the Phi Beta Kappa award for outstanding juniors and was an AP Scholar with Distinction.
• Haylie Romer, the daughter of Colleen and Martin Romer of Greencastle, Ind. -- A graduate of Greencastle High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society, the tennis team, the choir, swim team and the French club. She also was involved with Thespians and was a DePauw Alpha Student and Chastity Mentor at St. Paul's Church.
• Andrea Testin, the daughter of Bill and Judy Testin of Indianapolis -- A graduate of Lawrence North High School, she an ISSMA Piano State Gold Recipient several times, a Hoosier Girls State Delegate, a National AP Scholar with Distinction, a member of the soccer team and the National Honor Society. She also was a member of the Youth Group Leadership Team, Principal's Advisory Council and chamber choir.
• Christina Zerfas, the daughter of Monica and Jeffrey Zerfas of Bloomington, Ind. -- A graduate of Bloomington High School North, she was a three-year member and co-president of Habitat for Humanity, senior class president and a member of student council. She was founder and president of the Environmental Club; founder and owner of Parents Night Out, a monthly children's camp, and a K-12 tutor. She also is founder and owner of Domestic Deputies (a household help services business) and owner of College Bound Cutters (a lawncare service). She was involved in Student Athletic Board, the National Honor Society and the National Art Honor Society. She was an All-Area player of the year for soccer, serving as co-captain of the varsity soccer team, and a member of the varsity track team.
