International law expert to deliver Smith lecture at IU Maurer School of Law

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A renowned expert on international law has been named the George P. Smith II Distinguished Visiting Professor-Chair at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and will deliver a lecture at the school at noon Friday, Sept. 13, in the school's Moot Court Room.

Harold Hongju Koh is Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law School. He is one of the country's leading experts in public and private international law, national security law and human rights. The title of his lecture is "Turning the Page After September 11."

Koh began teaching at Yale Law School in 1985 and served as its dean from 2004 to 2009. From 1998 to 2001, he served as U.S. assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor.

He has received 13 honorary degrees and more than 30 awards for his human rights work, including awards from Columbia Law School and the American Bar Association for his lifetime achievements in international law. He has authored or co-authored eight books, published more than 180 articles, testified regularly before Congress, and litigated numerous cases involving international law issues in both U.S. and international tribunals. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College and Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Oxford University, where he was a Marshall Scholar. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School.

The George P. Smith II Distinguished Visiting Professor-Chair was established to enable the Maurer School of Law to invite exceptional scholars to Bloomington year after year. Its benefactor, George P. Smith II, is professor of law at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University of America Law School in Washington, D.C. He received his law degree from IU in 1964.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Indiana continuing legal education credit for the lecture has been applied for.
