BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University received a record $301 million in support from the private sector in the form of gifts and non-governmental research grants in fiscal year 2005, IU President Adam W. Herbert announced today (Oct. 6).

Total voluntary support, as it is called by universities nationwide, includes gifts made through the IU Foundation and Riley Children's Foundation, which is associated with IU's Riley Hospital. It also includes private-sector research grants awarded to IU faculty and staff.

Fiscal 2005 was a year of philanthropic firsts. IU set a record not only in total voluntary support, but also in non-governmental research grants, in gifts to the Riley Children's Foundation and in number of donors.

"This record level of private sector support reflects significant donor pride in the high quality of Indiana University's faculty and academic programs," Herbert said. "It provides significant momentum as we continue to build on IU's impressive institutional successes.

"The IU family is deeply grateful to the many donors who have shown such great confidence in and support for our institution," Herbert added. "Their generosity inspires us to reach for even higher levels of distinction. It also provides the supplemental resources necessary to achieve our aggressive quality enhancement aspirations."

Curt Simic, president of the IU Foundation, said that the number of donors to IU had grown from 99,805 in fiscal 2001 to a record 107,586 in fiscal 2005, "a significant increase in a challenging period of time." Simic added that fiscal 2005 also saw the university's second highest gift total on record -- $177.1 million. This figure includes gifts through the IU Foundation and the Riley Children's Foundation.
