10th Street to close for summer through large section of IU campus
A major portion of 10th Street through the Indiana University campus will be closed this summer for utility construction work.
Bloomington officials said 10th Street will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic from Woodlawn Avenue to Fee Lane starting Monday (May 6). Scheduled completion is July 13.
City Assistant Utilities Engineer Jonathan Heald said the project primarily involves increasing the size of sewer, water and storm drain lines to serve the IU Kelley School of Business that is now being expanded. The work was originally planned for completion last summer, but Heald said unforeseen conditions delayed the project until this year.
He said the contractor's work schedule will be from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays in order to complete the project before IU students return for classes in August. A detour will be posted using 13th Street between Indiana Avenue and Fee Lane.
Kirk White, IU special assistant for external relations, said the utility work is needed to better serve the university community, and he is grateful it could be scheduled when most students are off during the summer. "We encourage motorists and pedestrians to make alternate plans and to allow extra travel time during the construction period," he said.
