BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kathryn M. Bryan, a graduating senior from Marietta, Ga., was awarded Indiana University's prestigious Herman B Wells Senior Recognition Award as part of the university's annual Founders Day ceremonies. She was awarded a degree from IU on May 4.

The award, established to honor the late IU president and university chancellor, recognizes excellence in academic achievement and excellence of contribution to the campus community through leadership and participation in campus activities. Bryan was recognized at a dinner held recently in her honor.

Bryan was enrolled at IU as a Wells Scholar, in a scholarship program that ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university. Wells Scholars receive full tuition and fees, as well as a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus.

At IU, she discovered her passion for religious studies. She spent a year in the Middle East and returned to IU to research questions of justice and conduct in irregular warfare. Delving into issues of international human rights and unconventional conflict, Bryan composed a thesis on the topic. She volunteered for the Bloomington Coalition for Peace and for Amnesty International.

While in Palestine, she volunteered as an English teacher at the Beit Jibrin and Dheisheh refugee camps and helped plan an international conference on Arab women's rights. In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, Bryan organized a campus-wide escort network at IU Bloomington for Muslim women going to classes.

Bryan plans to pursue a master's degree in political theory at Oxford University or the London School of Economics.

Hometown information: Kathryn M. Bryan's family resides at 4468 Windsor Oaks Dr., Marietta, Ga.
