IU SLIS productivity outranks world counterparts

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Bloomington School of Library and Information Science is first in the world in faculty and program citations, according to a new study by Swedish sociologists.

Olle Persson and Fredrik Åström of Umeå University in Sweden examined articles from 27 international library and information science journals from 1990 to 2005. Not only were SLIS faculty most commonly cited by their peers, they placed well above the nearest contender institutions in each of three study intervals. Among individually cited authors (who are still at SLIS), the school's dean, Blaise Cronin, ranked among the top 10 in study intervals spanning 1996 to 2004. Self-citations were excluded from the Swedish study.

In September 2006, a similar study by University of Missouri-Columbia researchers found IU SLIS faculty were the most productive in the U.S. In previous iterations of that study, SLIS was ranked first (2000), and third (1996).
