Kelley School's life science workshop series to conclude with event on May 18 in Warsaw

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The final program in the Indiana LifeSC Initiative, a workshop series designed by Indiana University's Kelley School of Business to assist Indiana's healthcare and life science companies, is scheduled for May 18 (Friday) in Warsaw, Ind. It will focus on how firms can manage the process of research and development.

The conference, from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., will take place at the Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College in Warsaw. Zimmer Holdings, Inc., a Warsaw-based leader in the orthopaedics industry, is a sponsor along with the Evening MBA Program of the Kelley School of Business-Indianapolis.

"Biotechnology, medical device and pharmaceutical companies rely on their pipeline of new products to drive economic value. Managing the process of research and development is a key element of corporate strategy," said Lawrence Davidson, professor of business economics and public policy, and the Kelley School's liaison to its Health Care and Life Sciences Initiative.

"All life science firms struggle with uncertainties that surround valuation of intangible assets, commercialization of intellectual property and imposition of business time frames on the process of discovery and development," Davidson added. "From both an academic and practitioner perspective, this fourth conference in the Life Science Collaboration will reveal new thoughts on modern approaches to research and development management."

The program will begin with a welcome and overview presented by Audrey Beckman, Zimmer vice president of global product development, and Roger Schmenner, associate dean for Indianapolis programs at Kelley.

Beckman will be joined on a panel discussion about research and development management in a large corporate environment by Al Intoccia, vice president of research and development for urology and gynecology at Boston Scientific; Dan Peterson, vice president for industry and government affairs at Cook Group Inc.; and George Grobe, vice president for research at DePuy Orthopaedics. Phil Powell, Evening MBA Program faculty chair, will moderate.

Another panel discussion on providing outsourced research and development will feature Larry Kay, director of technology at Ft. Wayne Metals Research Products Corp.; Barry Parker, senior vice president for design and development at Symmetry Medical, Warsaw, Ind.; Stephen Schmid, associate professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Notre Dame; and Cary Woods, chief executive officer of IndyBioSystems and a research associate in the Goebel Lab in the IU School of Medicine's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Charles Dhanaraj, associate professor of management in the Kelley School will moderate.

The keynote presentation will be given by Craig F. Sampson, founder and director of the Chicago office of IDEO, the world's leading user-centered design firm. He will be introduced by Brad Bishop, director of public affairs at Zimmer, and Todd Pedersen, director of life sciences at the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

In addition to organizing the workshop series, the Kelley School operates a Web site at www.kelley.iu.edu/lifesc that includes research studies by Kelley faculty, MBA students and industry professionals about various segments of life science industries and the challenges presented.
