BLOOMINGTON , Ind. -- Indiana high school students who are interested in computer technology or want to consider a career in computer programming, networking or technology can get a taste of the field during a free workshop sponsored by the Pervasive Technology Labs (PTL) Community Outreach Program at Indiana University.

Information technology professionals from PTL's Advanced Network Management Lab will lead the half-day event, which includes a hands-on network security simulation exercise in which competing teams will race to identify network "intruders." Participants will also take a tour of the IU machine room, where the Big Red Supercomputer is housed, and talk about technology careers with IU IT professionals.

"The goal is to encourage young people from Indiana who have an aptitude or interest in technology to get excited about someday working in the field," said Gregory Travis, assistant director of the Advanced Network Management Lab. "We want to show them some of the leading-edge work IT professionals are doing right here in their own backyard."

The workshop takes place 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, June 28 at the Showers Building , 501 N. Morton St., Bloomington, Ind. Registration is open to Indiana high school students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior years this fall. Space is limited to 12 students.

More information and detailed registration instructions can be found at www.pervasive.iu.edu/outreach.
