BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie welcomes three new members named Thursday (Aug. 2) to the IU Board of Trustees and a fourth trustee reappointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels. Their terms begin immediately.

Stephen L. Ferguson, who was appointed to the board in 1998 by the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon and has served as president since 2005, has been reappointed and is expected to continue in that capacity.

Also appointed by Daniels to three-year terms on the board are Jack M. Gill, a 35-year veteran of Silicon Valley and a founder and managing member of Vanguard Ventures, a venture capital firm specializing in high technology start-ups, and Derica W. Rice, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Eli Lilly and Co.

Arthur D. King, a junior majoring in accounting and finance in IU's Kelley School of Business, was appointed as student trustee and will serve a two-year term.

"They bring a great deal of experience and talent to the board, and there is no doubt they will all be great contributors," McRobbie said. "On a personal note, I particularly appreciate that the governor worked very hard to find and select new trustees whose significant accomplishments in both academia and the professional worlds ensure that they will be able to help us achieve our ambitious objectives."

Stephen L. Ferguson

Ferguson, of Bloomington, is chairman of the board of Cook Group Inc., the parent company of companies worldwide involved in the research, development, manufacture and sale of medical devices. He earned a law degree from the IU School of Law-Bloomington in 1966, after earning an undergraduate degree from Wabash College.

He also serves on the board of directors of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and is of counsel with the law firm Ferguson & Ferguson in Bloomington. He is also a former member of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the Indiana General Assembly.

Jack M. Gill

Gill, of Houston, Texas, earned a doctorate degree in organic chemistry from IU in 1962 and was a founder of Vanguard Ventures, a venture capital firm specializing in high technology start-ups, with offices in Palo Alto, Calif., and Houston. Vanguard manages more than $500 million in capital and has been the lead investor in numerous highly successful companies. He also is a partner in Maven Venture Partners, a Palo Alto venture capital firm focused on mobile telecommunications investments.

Since 1999, he has been a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School, where he is a research scientist and lecturer and senior advisor to the director of the Center for Innovative Minimally Invasive Therapy. He and his wife, Linda, founded The Gill Foundation of Texas 10 years ago to focus on education and philanthropy and have provided gifts totaling more than $25 million to high schools, colleges and universities.

Gill's ties to IU include serving as a member of the deans' advisory boards of the Kelley School and the College of Arts and Sciences and as a director of the IU Foundation. He was named a 1999 winner of the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans. He also holds a chemistry and engineering degree from Lamar University.

Derica W. Rice

Rice, of Carmel, became senior vice president and CFO of Eli Lilly in May 2006. He also is a member of the company's policy and strategy and operations committees. He had been vice president and controller since July 2003. Born in Decatur, Ala., he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Kettering University (formerly the GMI Engineering & Management Institute) in 1988 and a master of business administration degree from the IU Kelley School of Business in 1990.

Rice joined Eli Lilly in 1990 as an international treasury associate and held various assignments as a sales representative, manager of global financial planning and analysis for the medical devices division, and global planning manager for pharmaceuticals. In 1995, he became finance director and chief financial officer for Lilly Canada and two years later was promoted to executive director and chief financial officer for European operations based in London. From 2000 to 2003, he was general manager of Lilly operations in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

He also is a member of the board of directors of Clarian Health North and the Center for Leadership Development and the board of governors of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Arthur D. King

King, of Columbus, is a student in the Hutton Honors College and the Mitte Honors Business Program. He is president of the Indiana University Board of Aeons, an advisory group that serves as a link between the student body and the university president, and chief executive officer of the Global Sales Leadership Society. He also has been director of student organization outreach for the IU Student Association.

A member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity, this spring he was a member of its Little 500 bicycle team. He was one of 60 IU students selected to participate in Sophomore Block, an honors program of the Kelley School that included a trip to India to study how government, business and culture are affecting that country's developing economy.

King has interned for Spraylat Corporation in Shanghai, China, and at Cummins Inc. in Columbus.

Gill and Rice replace Clarence W. Boone, Sr. of Gary and Jeffrey S. Cohen of Indianapolis. King succeeds Casey Cox, who graduated from the IU School of Law-Bloomington. Earlier this summer, Sue H. Talbot of Bloomington, was re-elected by IU Alumni Association members for a third three-year term on the board.
